In August 2022 Thando Book Club aired its first episode 3kTV DSTV Channel 293 one of the
recently licensed local broadcasters. The Book Club is co-produced by Sapi Bachi and
Selina Zigomo The first episode aired Thando Channel Facebook in March 2020 with the
vision to amplify the voices of African Female storytellers. “Our desire is to grow an online
community of African readers who come together to celebrate African female storytelling –
past, present and upcoming through profiling African women writers, their work, and their
impact on the collective narrative around our African identity and future” says Sapi Bachi
speaking on the book club. “It is our hope that that through our book club we reinforce African
Pride and put the spotlight on literature written by our own people. We want to see people
read for pleasure and entertainment and importantly putting a spotlight on female
story tellers.”
Speaking on Season 1 premiere “After over 50 episodes on Facebook we felt the time was
right to transition into Television and reach a wider audience” said Selina Zigomo who is also
the host of the book club. “We made great progress online and enjoyed the varied
conversations with Authors from around the continent.”
Thando Book Club Premiere’s on DSTV Channel 293, signals the platform’s deeper foray into the content space. The first season is which made up of thirteen 30 minute episodes features both new and experienced authors from Zimbabwe sharing their journeys. The Book Club brought back some of their audiences’ favourite online conversations to the silver screen.
