Maxine escapes an abusive polygamous marriage to a man much older than her to make a new life in Harare, Zimbabwe. The story follows the five madams she works for. Through them, we see the struggles of women trying to hold down careers and relationships in a big city where tradition, patriarchy, domestic abuse and unhealthy societal behaviours form a backdrop.

Makanaka Mavengere
Makanaka Mavengere is a author, playwright and screenwriter who has an Accounting degree and was born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe. Her debut novel Perfect Imperfections was published in August 2019 by Black Bird Books in South Africa. She wrote a play Maid in The Mirror which was produced and stage read at the Almasi Collaborative Conference in Harare Zimbabwe in January 2020 and she is currently working as a freelance scriptwriter.
